バルト三国への旅 3 (A Travel to the Three Baltic Countries 3)

旅の5日目、8月17日、「ラトビアのスイス」と称されるガウヤ川渓谷のシグルダに向かいました。

朝起きると、雨が降っていました。フルーツとチーズたっぷりの朝食を頂きながら、10日間、まったく雨が降らないというわけにはゆかないだろうと思うけど、観光の頃には晴れるよう頑張ってねと、れいこさんに頼まれました。

On August 17, the 5th day of our travel, we headed for Sigulda in the Gauja Valley.

When we got up, it was raining hard. Taking a breakfast with a lot of fruits, Reiko asked me to use a Po magic to chase the rain away before our sightseeing though she understood that it was difficult to keep a good weather all the time during the 10 days of our travel.

最初のグートマニャ洞穴に着いた頃にはポツポツ雨になり、れいこさんによしよしと頭を撫でてもらえました。

As the rain was going to stop when we arrived at our first sight, Gutmanis Cave, Reiko praised me for my good work.

この時、上にも洞穴があると聞いたので、足元がつるつるの滑りそうな石だったけれど、僕らは注意しながら石段を上がって写真を撮っていました。と、急に雨が激しくなり、鉄砲水のような流れが脇から噴き出し、石段の上を滑り落ちるので、降りるに降りられず、僕らは上に取り残されてしまった。

他の皆は下の洞穴に避難していたようで、どうやら僕らのことには気付いていなかったらしい。添乗員さんが、雨が止みそうにないから引き上げますという指示が、ガイドイヤホンを通じて届いたけれど、僕らが上に残されていることを告げる声は下には届かない。やむを得ず、水が激しく流れ落ちる石段をそろそろ降りて、皆を追いかけました。怖かった！

After the photo, we learned that there were other caves up on this cave. The stone steps to them were very slipperly with rain but we managed to climb up to take their pictures. Then suddenly, torrential rain started pouring and we could see flash flood here and there from the surrounding rocks, which ran over the stone steps so rapidly that we could not go down there any longer.

The other tour members evacuated in the lower large cave, without knowing we were left alone up there.

They finally decided to go back to the bus, judging that it would rain for a while. We learned their decision through the ear guide phone but our voice to ask them to wait could not reach them.

Reiko took courageous steps down against running water and ran after them, who stopped in front of the parking lot because the way to it was flooded.

右：駐車場の手前で道路が水浸しで、皆はここで足止めされていました。結局、ぐるりと周り、上の車道を抜けて駐車場に入りました。

right: The way to the parking lot was flooded. After all, we took a detour and walked along the bigger road for cars to reach the parking lot.

びしょびしょになって、れいこさんはプリプリ。

僕は、お兄ちゃんポー！　お土産、たくさん買って帰るから、雨、止まして！　と、必死のテレパシー。

それが通じたのか、次のトゥライダ城に着く頃には雨は止んで、青空も出てきました。やれやれ。

Reiko got frustrated with this rain so much that I sent my older brothers an urgent telepathy, "Dear old brothers, send me the extra power to stop this rain! Then I will get a lo---t of souvenirs for you!!!"

Thanks to their extra power, it had stopped raining before we reached the second sight, Turaidas Castle. We could even see some blue sky! Hooray!

左と中央：この塔の上まで上がりました。雨も止み、風もなく、遠くまで見渡せました。

left and middle: We climbed up this tower to get a good view of Sigulda. The raind had stopped and there was no wind.

右：この公園内にはスイス的な建物がいろいろありました。

right: There were some Swiss style buildings.

三番目に、シグルダ城趾を訪れました。ここはまだ復興中で、左は馬小屋だった場所。奥は迎賓館。右側に手工芸店が並んでいて、その前には小人さんたちも。

Our third sight in Sigulda was the old site of Sigulda Castle. The castle was still under recostruction. The left building in the large front garden used to be a stable while the middle one was a guest house. There were small craft shops on the right, too, and we found these small men in front of one of the shops.

お城は迎賓館の裏側、一番奥に立ち、この橋から向こうへは入れませんでした。

The castle was located in the back of the site. One was not allowed to cross this bridge.

ここでお昼になり、昼食もシグルダで取りました。

サラダとポークのメインにデザートの三コースで、やはり食べやすい味でした。

Lunch time arrived while we were in Sigulda. We visited a chic restaurant to have three courses lunch with a pork dish for the main. All dishes are good, again.

昼食後、リガに戻り、旧市街に向かう途中、中央市場に寄ってお買い物をしました。僕らはりんごの花のはちみつを買いました。

After the lunch, we went back to Riga and visite the central market on the way to the old city for shopping. We purchased apple blossom honey.

次に、中央広場にあるリガ大聖堂を見学。

Afterwards we visited Riga's Cathedral in the cetral plaza.

その後、この広場でエレクトロバスに乗り、旧市街の主だった建物を見て回りました。

Then we took an electronic bus to look around in the old city to get the basic idea of it.

下段中央は、「三人兄弟」と呼ばれる15世紀の古い住居。この前にバスが止まったから、写真を撮っていた観光客からブーイング。僕らを下ろしてから、バスは二軒ほど先に止まり直してくれた。この時にも聖ペテロ教会を案内してもらったけれど、外から写真を撮っただけだった。上に登れるということだったので、翌日の自由行動のときに再訪することにした。

The middle photo of the lower level shows "Three Brothers," the private houses built in the 15th century. As our bus stopped just in front of them, visitors who were taking their photos got angry. The driver let us descended from the bus and moved it two houses ahead.

The bus also brought us to St. Peter's Church, where we revisited on the next day to climb up to the top.

左の市庁舎広場などもバスで案内してもらい、旧市街地のおおよそのイメージがつかめた。

その後、バスで移動して、新市街地のアールヌーボー建物群を見て回った。（中央）

その散策中に面白い絵を見つけた。こういう表現が許される国になっていることが嬉しい。

middle: After the first look around the city, we visited some New Art style buildings in the new city.

right: There we found an interesting picture. We were happy to learn that this country now can let such a critical picture present.

リガでの夕食。入り口は地味だったけれど、ミシュランに記載されているお店。若い格好良い男性が出迎えてくれた。この人が、このレストランを差配していた。この日はメインがスズキだったので、白ワインを頂いた。

ワインも美味しかったし、料理のソースがどれも格別で、味が洗練されていた。今回の旅行では食事は大体に良かったけれど、ここがダントツに美味しかった。ボリュームもそれほどではなく、僕らは完食。もっとも、お腹はいっぱいになった！

This night's resaturant for dinner was simple but it was a restaurant recommended by Michelin guidebook. We were welcomed by a young handsome man, who seemed to be in the charge of this restaurant. We chose white wine for the dinner, for the main course was pan-fried sea bass.

Their wine was good. Besides all the dishes were very polished with delicious sauces. During this travel, we were served good dishes but those in this resaturant were the best of all without a mistake. The amount of food was proper, too. We could eat all of them up though we were happily quite full.
