7 (Southern Italian Holiday 7)
September 11, the 8th day of the travel and the last day in Italy was a free day. We selpt till late and had a breakfast late, too, at the table looking at the sea, as we had done the day before. It was cloudy during the morning in Naples, probably because of the storm in Capri the night before, but the afternoon turned out to be fine, again.

left: Neapolitan sfogliatelle. We usually do not eat sweet breads but they were so light and crispy that we loved them.
middle: Our hotel’s main front. It was well equipped good hotel but the front view was not special. Our room was in the next building on the right.
right) After breakfast, we took a walk along the sea on the right hand.
left: The sea was very rough on this morning. We thought that if we had taken a boat on that day, we could not have entered cave.
middle: We walked all the way to the park, which was closed. Then we found a statue of Umberto 1 with a seagull on his head.
right: Umberto 1 and a seagull. We first wondered the meaning of their combination and then realized that the seagull was alive. Even Umberto 1 would have expected that he would serve a stand for a seagull to find his bates.
left: We walked back to the hotel.
middle: After checking out the hotel, we still had a lot of time to spend and decided to follow our tour guide, who offered to take us to Elmo castle.
On the way, we passed by Fontana del Gigante (Fountain of the Giant) in Borgo Santa Lucia.
right: We walked to the center of the city.
left: Funicular. It ran in the tunnel all the way.
middle: The last stop.
right: As we took a funicular, the mountain train, we somehow expected the mountain scenery on the top. Yet we came out into the middle of buildings.
S. Elmo Castle. They offer good views from the castle walls in the four directions.

A view from St. Elmo Castle, with Mt. Vesuvius in the middle.

The coastline of the Bay of Naples was gorgeous.

Certosa di San martino

left) On the way down from the mountain, we took a subway.
middle) Their subway cars were more see-through with glass doors than the Japanese cars.
right) They kept saying that the subway station of Toledo, our stop, was the most beautiful subway station in the world. I did not find anything special in their structures except for the wall decorations.
left: Out of the Toledo subway station, we found a horse statue. From here, we were expected to walk toward the sea and turn left to reach the hotel.
middle: Partly because it was quite warm and partly because we took a late breakfast, we were not much hungry and decided to buy a cup of ice cream for lunch. We ordered the large size, which cost 5.20 Euros. As we had learned that some people in the tour had to pay 20 Euros for a cup of ice cream in Capri, this price was very reasonable in the center of Naples.
The young man at the counter asked us if we were Japanese. He said that he would like to visit Japan some day and we said that he should come by all means!
right: We ordered Lemon and caramel. They were very tasty and satisfying.
We had a night flight from Naples to Istanbul.
The night views of Naples were so excellent that I was humming one of the old canzones, Addio a Napole.
